Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) reportedly orchestrated a secret media campaign with a left-wing mainstream media publication to counter rhetoric from then-President Donald Trump about the results of the 2020 election.
The New Yorker noted that Eric Edelman, a friend of Cheney’s who served as a national security adviser to her father, former Vice-President Dick Cheney, revealed the following tidbit to the publication:
Cheney’s rupture with the House Republican Conference has become all but final in recent days, but it has been months in the making. Edelman revealed that Cheney herself secretly orchestrated an unprecedented op-ed in the Washington Post by all ten living former Defense Secretaries, including her father, warning against Trump’s efforts to politicize the military. The congresswoman not only recruited her father but personally asked others, including Trump’s first Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis, to participate.
The story was seemingly confirmed by KION-TV anchor Aaron Groff, who wrote on Twitter: “Back on January 4th former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told me it all ‘began with a staff person to former Vice President Cheney.’”
Very interesting. Back on January 4th former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told me it all “began with a staff person to former Vice President Cheney.”

Cheney’s future as the No. 3 in Republican House leadership is in serious doubt as she continues to attack Trump instead of focusing on galvanizing Republicans by attacking the Biden administration, congressional Democrats, and the political left’s agenda. Cheney even sniped House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in a recent op-ed in The Washington Post.
McCarthy has largely been patient with Cheney, waiting to see if she comes to her senses and sees the bigger picture and gets with the program, but his patience and the patience of other top Republicans seems to have run out.
“There’s no concern about how she voted on impeachment — that decision has been made,” McCarthy told Fox News’s “Fox & Friends” this week. “I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message. We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority.”
In hot mic comments right before the interview, McCarthy hit Cheney much harder, saying, “I think she’s got real problems.”
“I’ve had it with … I’ve had it with her,” McCarthy continued. “You know, I’ve lost confidence. … Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place.”
Top Republicans in Washington, D.C., have had even more pointed comments for Cheney, calling her a political liability and saying that she will be removed from GOP leadership.
“There is no way that Liz will be conference chair by month’s end,” a top McCarthy ally said on Monday. “When there is a vote, it won’t be a long conference; it will be fast. Everyone knows the outcome.”
“She is a big distraction,” the ally said. “I don’t see McCarthy saving her this time.”
“This is a broad range of lawmakers who have had it with her,” a second McCarthy ally said. “She’s a liability, and McCarthy’s as fed up as the rest of us that she is focused on the past rather than winning back the House.”
